NFS Undercover

Need for Speed: Undercover is the 12th installment of the popular racing video game series Need for Speed, developed by EA Black Box and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Microsoft Windows, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS[3] and mobile phone in November 2008. The game was later released on the iPhone OS on April 27, 2009. It is preceded by Need for Speed: ProStreet. According to EA, the game has sold over 5.2 million copies on all 8 platforms combined. Need For Speed: Undercover is also the last Need For Speed game on the PlayStation 2.

Gameplay

Undercover features a new open world map consisting of 109 miles (175 km) of road and a large highway system, making it the largest Need for Speed "world" EA has created so far.[14] The game's environment consists of four boroughs: Palm Harbor, Port Crescent, Gold Coast Mountains, and Sunset Hills. Some boroughs are the same as Need for Speed Most Wanted, just shifted to different positions. These four boroughs make up the city, Tri-City, presumably a city located on Gulf Coast. The road system includes four water crossings, going clockwise: the Main Guy Causeway (Ocean Expressway connecting Sunset Hills to Port Crescent via man-made island), the Vale Causeway (Sunset Hills to Palm Harbor), the North T Causeway (Man-made island to Palm Harbor), and the Memorial Tunnel (Port Crescent to Palm Harbor). Undercover also features a new continuous highway system. In previous installments, highways were relatively small circuits concentrated within separate boroughs. In Undercover, the main highway circles Tri-City, with each of the four boroughs sharing a piece of the larger circuit. The longer highway length gives a more realistic shape, with long straight areas, gentle curves, rest areas and large interchanges. Lastly, the entire map is open from the start of the game, unlike previous installments where boroughs had to be unlocked.

The police system is similar to Most Wanted and Carbon. It uses a similar bar graph at the bottom of the screen that moves between the blue "Evade" (shown as green on PS2 and Wii), on the right side, and the red "Busted", on the left side, depending on the player's speed and proximity to police. The "Cooldown" period after evading pursuing police units returns as well, along with heat levels, speedbreaker and pursuit breakers. Also similar to Most Wanted and Carbon, police vehicles range from generic city patrol cars to federal pursuit cars accompanied by police heavy SUVs and helicopters. Unlike previous games, the type of police that appear is not entirely dependent on heat levels (i.e. high level police can appear at low heat levels and vice versa) but more on the player's wheelman level (i.e. progress through the game). At a high wheelman level, federal police will immediately join the pursuit, even if the player was at a low heat level.Common police tactics such as road blocks, rolling road blocks, spike strips, and PIT maneuvers are all featured, although some are only used by federal police. In addition, the player gets to drive a police vehicle in a mission in career mode, which consists of stealing a state police car.

The damage system returns to Undercover and is similar to Need for Speed: ProStreet. It differs from ProStreet in that the damage is only cosmetic and does not adversely affect performance. However, a car can still be "Totaled" in the new "Highway Battle" mode and in some missions in career mode. During these missions a car damage bar is displayed, which indicates the amount of damage done to the player's vehicle. The primary goal of these missions is to deliver certain cars without totaling them. In general, damage is automatically repaired after every career race or police pursuit, unlike in ProStreet where it had to be repaired by the player at a cost (either money or a "repair marker").

The customization of cars is similar to Need for Speed: ProStreet but has been enhanced on the level of graphics and detail.] The new color palette and the "matte" paint were improved. The game also features aftermarket parts like Carbon did. As a bonus, EA added a vinyl similar to the vinyl of the BMW M3 GTR in Need For Speed: Most Wanted.

The player can gain reputation points as they progress through the game's story by participating in side missions or performing flashy maneuvers in a police chase. In turn, this grants the player access to bonus missions, adding a small RPG-like element to gameplay.

Thief 3: Deadly Shadows

One of the many reasons why 1998 was such a groundbreaking year for gaming is Thief: The Dark Project, a game that helped invent what's now commonly referred to as the stealth action genre. Though two other noteworthy stealth action games were released that same year--Metal Gear Solid and Tenchu: Stealth Assassins--Thief's brand of stealth was the most convincing, and it went on to become the most influential. The original developer of Thief and its similar sequel is unfortunately no longer in business, but Eidos and Ion Storm thankfully snatched up the rights and have finally delivered a new chapter in the series that's suitable for longtime Thief fans and newcomers alike. Like its predecessors, the new Thief: Deadly Shadows features a memorable protagonist, a great setting, and some very interesting missions. It also happens to suffer from a variety of miscellaneous, minor flaws. These are unfortunate, since Thief: Deadly Shadows is great game, for the most part.

At its core, Deadly Shadows sticks very closely to the formula of the older Thief games, which are first-person perspective action adventures in which you must carry out a series of high-risk, high-reward missions as Garrett, a self-serving master thief living in a cold, surreal, medieval world. As in previous Thief games, the gameplay in Deadly Shadows primarily revolves around having to retrieve a bunch of special trinkets (and other riches) from assorted heavily guarded establishments--and doing so by hiding in shadows, waiting for unsuspecting guards to turn their backs, and then blackjacking them so that they remain unconscious for the remainder of the mission. You'll have a wide variety of other gadgets to help you, including lock picks, water arrows for dousing torches and other firelight, flashbombs for temporarily blinding opponents, and more. There's always a compass onscreen to help you navigate the sometimes mazelike environments, and you'll also be paying close attention to the onscreen "light gem," which changes color depending on how well-concealed you are. This interface feature has always worked great in the Thief series.

You'll be treated to an intriguing story, which is narrated by an even more intriguing protagonist, whose particular brand of cynicism isn't nearly as unwelcome as cynicism tends to be. The story gradually and surprisingly unfolds during the course of what's a decidedly lengthy single-player adventure. Due to the open-ended nature of the game and its four available difficulty settings, average playing time should vary quite a bit from one player to the next. However, it's safe to say you're not going to get through this one in a weekend, unless all you did was play.

Players will use their powers of loyalty and fear to earn respect through interactions with characters in the world. The Godfather film from Paramount Pictures featured some of Hollywood's finest actors and several are contributing to the game's development. All character likenesses from the movie will be included and lending their voices to add a dramatic and cinematic touch to the game are the late Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, James Caan as Sonny Corleone and Robert Duvall as consigliore Tom Hagen.

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay is one of those exceedingly rare types of games that delivers exceptionally high quality through and through and single-handedly ups the ante for all similar games. The fact that it also happens to be based on a movie franchise--something that's usually a bad sign for a game--makes it all the more incredible. You could call it a first-person shooter, but that would be selling it short. This ambitious game is played mostly from a first-person perspective, and it effectively and innovatively combines excellent shooting, hand-to-hand combat, stealth, and adventure elements with a solid story and truly outstanding, highly atmospheric graphics and sound. The game debuted on the Xbox earlier this year, but it has turned out to be every bit as surprisingly good on the PC, thanks to an excellent translation that shows no traces of the game's console origins. Furthermore, some exciting, brand-new extras that are exclusive to the PC version make it worth experiencing even by those who've played and enjoyed the original version of the game. No, the Chronicles of Riddick isn't a highly anticipated first-person shooter sequel. But don't let that make you assume it can't be one of the year's best action games--because it is.

Those familiar with the Xbox version of The Chronicles of Riddick should know that the new PC "Developer's Cut" version is fundamentally the same game, but with a few key differences: Its visuals have been enhanced to be proportionally outstanding even when measured against the PC's extremely high standards; its controls have been optimized to make it easy to pick up by anyone who has played a PC first-person shooter lately; it features a new and exciting gameplay sequence that has been seamlessly integrated into the middle of the story; and it boasts an unlockable "commentary" mode, which annotates the entire game with extensive, often fascinating DVD-style audio commentary from the frightfully talented development team at Stockholm-based Starbreeze Studios.

HALF LIFE 2

1998. Half-Life® sends a shock through the game industry with its combination of pounding action and continuous, immersive storytelling. Valve's debut title wins more than 50 game-of-the-year awards on its way to being named “Best PC Game Ever” by PC Gamer.

NOW. By taking the suspense, challenge and visceral charge of the original, and adding startling new realism and responsiveness, Half-Life® 2 opens the door to a world where the player's presence affects everything around him, from the physical environment to the behaviors, and even emotions, of both friends and enemies.

The player again picks up the crowbar of research scientist Gordon Freeman, who finds himself on an alien-infested Earth being picked to the bone, its resources depleted, its populace dwindling. Freeman is thrust into the unenviable role of rescuing the world from the wrong he unleashed back at Black Mesa. And a lot of people he cares about are counting on him.

Half-Life 2 is an immersive first person shooter from the developers at Valve Software, the creators of the original Half-Life. Building off of the riveting storyline and gameplay of the debut title, Half-Life 2 pushes the envelope even further and has once again "raised the bar" of the FPS genre. Using Valve's own built-from-the-ground-up "Source" engine, Half-Life 2 offers interactive physical environments, intense realism and impressive graphics, all bundled together with a masterfully-crafted storyline.

Released on November 16, 2004 after nearly 5 years of development, Half-Life 2 was recieved grandly, winning over 35 Game of the Year awards for 2005. To date, Half-Life 2 has sold over four million copies, 25% of which have been purchased using Steam, Valve's digital content delivery system. In addition to the PC version, Half-Life 2 has been ported to Xbox and will be released for both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 in 2007.

Players once again assume the role of scientist Gordon Freeman, but this time Gordon finds himself in a post-apocalyptic environment—apparently a result of the Black Mesa Incident. With Earth's human population oppressively held in prison-like urban centers, its natural landscape ravaged by the effects of Xen infestations and a whole new enemy that has viciously annexed the human race into its ranks, the future of mankind seems bleak at best. Looks like it's once again up to Gordon to save the day!

MAFIA: The City Of Lost Heaven

Some men do not accept the rules. They create their own.

It is 1930. Due to circumstances he couldn't possibly have predicted, Tommy's life as a cabdriver is about to be exchanged for a life in the Mafia. At first he continues his work as a driver and nothing could be better. He soon becomes good friends with his sidekicks Paulie and Sam, and although the work is sometimes risky, he earns more money than he did as a cabdriver. But as time goes on he is ordered to undertake more and more unpleasant jobs – and he starts to become disillusioned with the life he has chosen.

Features:

  • Explore over 12 square miles of this 1930's American city, with intelligent simulated traffic, landmarks and surrounding countryside. This fictional city was created with reference to authentic buildings and photos from that period.
  • Over 20 action-packed missions with tasks including from mob hits, car chases, bootlegging, shootouts, assassinations of persona non grata, bank robberies and even simply going for a romantic walk with your love.
  • Over 30 highly realistic and hi-poly indoor locations rendered with the latest 3D engine technology. Take a trip through a city of the 30’s, visit places such as the airport, banks, galleries, restaurants, the harbor and many others.
  • An expansive epic story line inspired by real events that took place in the 30’s. The story is conveyed through spoken dialogs and motion-capture animations from professional actors.
  • Drive one of 60 historic cars, which are based on models that were on the road in the 30's and the physics of which have been faithfully reproduced. Due to the realistic physics and real time deformation of the cars, getting involved in a chase with the police is definitely something to avoid.
  • Over 12 weapons to choose from, including baseball bats, sawn-off shotguns, Magnums or the legendary Thompson tommy gun, to deal with those that dare to cross your path.
Technology:
  • The LS3D Engine was developed in-house by Illusion Softworks: it supports the realistic rendering of large exterior environments and highly detailed interiors.
  • Effects such as mirrors, environmental mapping, real-time shadows, deformations and more are used to create convincing environments.
  • Fully motion-capture character animations, including realistic facial animations, lip synchronization and more.
  • One of the most realistic car physics systems ever created in a computer game. Each car has more than 100 parameters to adjust to imitate it's real life double.
Story:

The hero, Tommy, is a cabdriver who is glad to have a job during the depression. His happiness, however, does not last long. By a freak chance, he managed to save some members of a Mafia Family from being killed by hit men from another Mafia gang. Three Mafiosi, who were being chased, had jumped into his cab and ordered him to shake off their pursuers ... and Tommy, thanks to his excellent skills as a driver, managed to do just that.

While the rescued gangsters, seeing what a capable driver he is, offer him a job under their boss, Don Salieri, the killers working for Don Morelli only thirst for revenge. This leads to Tommy losing his cab under dramatic circumstances, and thus also losing his livelihood. Only by seeking refuge with Don Salieri's gang can he save his life. Visualizing himself in the dismal position of having to stand in some soup-line, he accepts the job offered to him by the Family.

In the beginning, Tom likes his new job as a gangster. It gives him an opportunity to take revenge on Morelli's men, he is never short of money, and all he has to do is occasionally give someone a bit of a warning or a quick thrashing. People in the city respect him. He meets a girl, whom he eventually marries and and has a child with.

Gradually, he starts to see the other side of his work: murders, assassinations, dangerous shootouts, and hight-speed car chases in which the smallest miscalculation can mean death. The real horror of his job gets through to him only when he is ordered to kill people who he knows personally, and who he likes. He is asked to kill an accountant working for the Family who co-operated with the police in order to save his loved ones, and then kill his own wife's friends.... Tommy is by now a respected man in the Family, and therefore nobody suspects that he might not carry out his assignments to the letter, even though sometimes he does just that. However, nothing lasts forever.
